I am trying to get a job in apparel, in which I have no job experience but have educational experience. I am trying to gear my resume to this field but my job experience is totally unrelated (bartending, promotional work)Is it unprofessional to swap the education and job experience in order on my resume? How do I make a resume for a job that I have no experience in? Any advise is much appreciated.

Wendy, thanks for your question. Remember not to double post your enquiry next time. If your request is up on the blog, I will definitely read it and reply.

I'm glad to know that you have taken the courage to give yourself a go at a career change, as many people find it hard to do so no matter how much they dislike their current job.

Regarding your question, I have a few suggestions. Since you have the relevant educational experience, you should put it to good use. Try to put more emphasis on this aspect in your resume.

Next, you can include your strong interest and knowledge for apparel and fashion design. Below are a few things you can add to your resume:
- Strong interest in analyzing fashion trends.
- Strong sense for fabrics appreciation and comparing.
- Cut patterns and constructed sample, using sewing equipment.
- Attended fashion and fabric shows to observe new fashions and materials.

You can also put your unrelated job to use in your resume, but highlight the creative part of the job. Such as:
- Experimented with ingredients, such as liquor, soda, water, sugar and bitters, to prepare cocktails and other drinks.
- Arranged bottles and glasses to make attractive display.

Well, that's all I have for you. Hope you make a successful career change!

Hello. I am trying to re-enter the workforce after staying home to raise children for 10 years. During that time I've moved internationally (twice), learned 2 other languages, and chaired several volunteer organizations and events. How can I design a resume to highlight my skills without having any recent work experience? Thank you.

At December 28, 2006 at 4:05 PM , Blogger Mr Benrick said...

Mrsraz, glad to hear that you are returning to the workforce, and I find that you are very much well positioned too.

First, you have to decide what kind of jobs suit you most. For your case, I would suggest you take up a job in the non-profit sector as you have a vast experience in such areas (volunteering services).

The fact that you have learned another 2 languages places you in a better position for job consideration. Try to highlight this in in the skills section of your resume.

I hope this post has answered most of your queries. All the best!

Help! Executive Assistant work sought - years of experience -- there is nothing I feel I can't do -- have had to stay steps ahead of bosses and projects. Forte: issues anticipation -- I know what stumbling blocks may occur in projects and therefore can make accomodations ahead of time so they won't happen.

Need resume redone -- not good at doing things about me. Will be seeking employment in MA shortly - live in ME - will rent a place in MA - wages so much higher. Need to get noticed by recruiters. I believe age is a negative factor - 56 -- I don't consider it a factor -- why should they? I've been replaced with 2 people when I've left jobs. I am sending my resume to you for help. Position advertised Executive Assistant I would like to apply for - hugh pay - qualifications listed are tasks I have been doing for years at various positions. How do I get myself noticed? Thanks for your help. Susie

I am currently looking for employment. I was currently layed off from my previous job for lack of work in the area. I am an Industrial Engineer with 5 years of Project Management and Field Engineering experience. I have 3 requests/ questions.
1. In an interview or when the question comes up as to why I am seeking new employment or why I am no longer with my previous company, is it ok to tell potentail employers I was layed off? What is the best way to word this so it is a positive instead of sounding like a negative?
2. Could you post a sample resume for a midlevel engineer.
3.What would the expecting salary range be normally in the Southeast?

Thank you very much.

I am looking for consulting jobs in the mining industry as a Toxicologist. I have a lot of training and general experience in the field of Toxicology but not specifically in mining. Also - the jobs are very rarely advertised so it is difficult to slant the information to a particular opportunity.

I have a B.S. in Science from Penn State (graduated in 1974), MD from Jefferson Medical College in 1979, Residency training at Stanford and Yale. Postgraduate training at University of California and California Poison Control Center, National Institute of Health and Nix Medical Center.

I have had my own business for the past 25 years doing consulting work in the field of Toxicology working with patients and groups of people in both environmental and industrial problems. Some have included investigating causes of illness outbreaks due to solvents and metals, discovering the link between certain exposures and cancers, and minimizing exposures to hazardous chemicals to stop diseases from occurring.

I also have a lot of experience with regulatory compliance - both OSHA and EPA.

What would be a good form for my resume? Thanks for your time.
